SPECIMEN SERIES
Collaboration with Justine Holzman

The forms and surfaces of the Specimen Series vases are generated computationally and parametrically modeled to create a technique-driven, fluid interpretation of the original geometry. The final design was digitally fabricated, using rapid prototyping technologies to 3D print the model in ABS plastic. This prototype was used to create a plaster slip-casting mold which was implemented to generate multiple casts in porcelain. The Specimen Series serves as a framework for design research that focuses on merging computation, technique, and material formation processes. Through the combination of digital and analogue procedures, each vessel contains similar surface characteristics such as pattern, variation, and fluidity, while, simultaneously, subtle nuances within the material behavior and craft allow each vessel to express uniqueness in reflectivity, color, and texture. The Specimen Series of vases were designed through an interdisciplinary collaboration with Justine Holzman of 7B7D.
