This project explores the potential to create a three dimensional tiling system, based on the Cairo tessellation. Variation within a field is achieved through the use of components with subtle differences. In this prototype for a wall mounted tiling system, the overall effect of the pattern creates a field of apertures and sinuous curves that imply motion. Three CNC milled components were used to create three plaster molds for slip casting. The two-part molds were used to slip cast over 30 components that can be arranged to form a larger assembly. The ceramic tiling system is used to illuminate the surrounding environment with indirect lighting. LED lights are placed within the void spaces of each component and controlled through the use of a microcontroller and code, allowing various lighting patterns to be programmed. In this prototype, gradations in brightness are calibrated to provide a temporal, visual rhythm and the translucent quality of the porcelain is exploited to produce a glowing and blushing effect.
